Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with epilepsy:
- Willingness to give written consent and ability to follow the study requirements
- Between 18 and 55 years old
- Diagnosed with focal epilepsy (a type of epilepsy where seizures start in one specific area of the brain)
- Epilepsy that has not responded to treatments, as defined by the International League Against Epilepsy
- At least 3 seizures that spread from one side of the brain to both sides (causing stiffening and shaking of the whole body) in the past 18 months
- Previously underwent long-term video brain-wave (EEG) monitoring for surgical assessment within the past 10 years at the Department of Functional Neurology and Epileptology at Hospices Civils de Lyon (confirm with trial site)
For healthy volunteers:
- Willingness to give written consent and ability to follow the study requirements
- Between 18 and 55 years old
Who may not be able to join:
For people with epilepsy:
- Having an ongoing or long-term breathing or heart problem
- Having obstructive sleep apnoea (a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep)
- Currently taking antidepressant medications known as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
- Currently being treated with a vagus nerve stimulator (an implanted device used to help control seizures)
- Currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- Currently receiving psychiatric care
- Currently restricted of personal liberty by a legal or government decision
- Currently under a legal guardianship or similar protective arrangement
- Not covered by a social security or equivalent scheme
- A positive pregnancy test at the first study visit, where applicable
For healthy volunteers:
- A personal history of epilepsy
- Having an ongoing or long-term breathing or heart problem
- Having obstructive sleep apnoea
- Currently pregnant, in labour, or breastfeeding
- Currently receiving psychiatric care
- Currently restricted of personal liberty by a legal or government decision
- Currently under a legal guardianship or similar protective arrangement
- Not covered by a social security or equivalent scheme
- A positive pregnancy test at the first study visit, where applicable
