Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with, or are suspected to have, epilepsy that originates in the temporal lobe of the brain.
- People who speak English or Spanish fluently, or as their native language.
- For people having a specific type of brain monitoring procedure (called sEEG): the planned placement of the monitoring wires must include certain areas of the hippocampus (a memory-related part of the brain) on one or both sides.
- People who have at least a 7th grade reading level.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a hearing impairment that is not corrected by a hearing aid.
- People who are unable to read a newspaper held at arm's length, even with glasses or contact lenses.
- People who have a measured intellectual disability (an estimated IQ below 70).
- People who have ever had electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or have any history of psychosis — except for brief episodes of psychosis directly following a seizure.
- People who have ever been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder.
- People who currently have an anxiety disorder, major depression, or bipolar disorder.
- People who have a neurodegenerative disease (such as conditions that cause progressive brain decline), widespread brain lesions, or significant language difficulties beyond trouble with word-finding.
- People who have a medical condition that could affect memory or thinking ability, such as HIV or a cancer that has the potential to spread.
- People who have acute kidney failure or end-stage kidney disease.
