Who might be able to join this trial:

For the patient group in the long-term follow-up part of the study:

  • People who are willing and able to give informed consent to take part
  • Men or women between the ages of 40 and 80
  • People who are generally in good health, or who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for less than 10 years, with no signs of eye damage (retinopathy) or other diabetes-related complications
  • People whose HbA1c blood sugar level is 7% or higher

For the healthy comparison group in the long-term follow-up part of the study:

  • People who are willing and able to give informed consent to take part
  • Men or women between the ages of 40 and 80
  • People who are generally in good health and have not been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes

For the snapshot (cross-sectional) part of the study:

  • People who are willing and able to give informed consent to take part
  • Men or women between the ages of 40 and 80
  • People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for more than 20 years, with or without signs of eye damage (retinopathy) or other diabetes-related complications
  • People whose HbA1c blood sugar level is 7% or higher

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with eye or whole-body conditions other than diabetes
  • People with high blood pressure (readings above 140/90 mmHg)
  • People with anaemia (a low red blood cell level, measured as a haematocrit below 35%)
  • People who currently smoke
  • People who have had laser eye treatment, or who are pregnant
