Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 19 years of age or older
- You are willing to take part and have signed a consent form agreeing to join the study
- You have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes
- Your blood sugar control level (called HbA1c) is between 7.0% and 10.0% while taking one, two, or three diabetes pills (not at the highest possible doses)
- You have at least one of the following health conditions: heart disease (blocked arteries in the heart), stroke or mini-stroke caused by narrowed arteries, narrowed arteries in the neck, legs, or abdomen, having had diabetes for 10 or more years, an enlarged heart muscle on the left side, protein in the urine, reduced kidney function, diabetic eye disease, or diabetic nerve damage — OR — you have two or more of the following risk factors: a close family member who had heart disease before age 55 (men) or 65 (women), high blood pressure (on medication or with readings of 140/90 or above), low "good" (HDL) cholesterol (below 40 mg/dL), currently smoking, or being overweight (BMI of 25 or above)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have Type 1 diabetes
- Your kidney function is significantly reduced (eGFR below 45 ml/min/1.73m²)
- Your liver enzyme levels (AST or ALT) are more than 3 times higher than the normal range
- You have moderate to severe heart failure with noticeable symptoms (confirm with trial site)
- You were hospitalised for a serious heart or blood vessel event in the 3 months before signing the consent form
- You are currently receiving active treatment for cancer
- You have a medical reason that prevents you from taking one of the study drugs
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- The doctor running the trial has concerns about assigning you to the standard blood sugar control group for ethical reasons (confirm with trial site)
