Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are male or female, aged between 18 and 70 years old
• You have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with diarrhoea or mixed bowel habits, based on having stomach pain or discomfort at least 3 days per month for the last 3 months, with symptoms starting at least 6 months ago, plus at least two of these: symptoms improve after going to the toilet, symptoms started when your bowel movements became more or less frequent, or symptoms started when your stool became harder or looser
• Alternatively, you experience loose or watery stools (without pain) in at least 75% of your bowel movements for at least 3 months over the past 6 months (known as functional diarrhoea)
• You have had a colonoscopy (a camera examination of the bowel) within the last 5 years with a normal result
• You are able to read and fill in questionnaires
• You are willing to give written consent to take part in the study

Who may not be able to join:

• You have been diagnosed with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, lactose intolerance, coeliac disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, cancer, immune system disorders, autoimmune diseases, or severe liver or kidney problems
• You have had surgery on your small or large intestine, or have had your appendix, womb, or gallbladder removed in the last 6 months
• You have a severe mental illness, or your psychiatric medication type or dose has changed in the last 3 months (confirm with trial site)
• You currently have an active infection
• You have used prebiotics, probiotics, antibiotics, or anti-inflammatory drugs in the last 2 weeks
• You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
