Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have been diagnosed with a specific type of cancer (adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma) of the esophagus or the area where the esophagus meets the stomach, confirmed by a tissue biopsy.
• Your cancer has spread to a limited number of places in the body — no more than 5 spots, in no more than 2 organs (such as the liver, lung, or adrenal gland) — and those spots can be treated with surgery or radiation.
• You are generally able to carry out daily activities with little or no limitation (confirm with trial site for exact fitness level required).
• Your heart and lungs are functioning well enough, based on standard tests.
• Your blood cell counts (white cells, platelets, and red cells) are at acceptable levels for cancer treatment, as judged by your oncologist.
• Your kidneys and liver are working well enough, based on blood test results.
• If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you must have a negative pregnancy blood test at the start of the study.
• You are between 18 and 79 years old.

Who may not be able to join:

• Your cancer has spread widely across the lining of the abdomen or lungs (peritoneal or pleural dissemination), or fluid around those areas still shows cancer cells at the time of joining the trial.
• You have cancer that has spread to more than one spot in the bones or more than one spot in the brain (one solitary bone or one solitary brain metastasis may be allowed if it can be treated with targeted radiation — confirm with trial site).
• You have any other health condition that your doctor feels would make it unsafe for you to have surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments.
• You have an active autoimmune disease (where your immune system attacks your own body) that has needed prescription treatment in the last 2 years — though some exceptions apply, such as a thyroid or hormone replacement therapy (confirm with trial site).
• You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
