Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 80 years old
- People whose stomach cancer tumour is located in the upper part of the stomach or at the junction where the oesophagus meets the stomach (a specific type called Siewert II or III), and where surgery is expected to fully remove the tumour
- People whose tumour has been confirmed as a type called adenocarcinoma through a biopsy and laboratory testing
- People with upper stomach adenocarcinoma at an early, localised stage (cT1N0M0), or people with adenocarcinoma at the oesophagus-stomach junction at a stage of cT1-3N0-1M0, with no signs of cancer spreading to distant lymph nodes on imaging
- People whose life expectancy is longer than 6 months
- People who have not had previous upper abdominal surgery (having had a laparoscopic gallbladder removal is acceptable)
- People who have not received chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy before surgery
- People with a good general physical fitness level, as measured by standard medical scoring tools before surgery (ECOG score of 0 or 1, and ASA grade I–III)
- People whose heart, liver, kidneys, and other major organs are functioning well
- People who are willing to sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose pre-surgery scans show enlarged lymph nodes in the area that have merged together, with the largest being 3 cm or more
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have had another type of cancer in the past 5 years
- People with a body temperature of 38°C or higher before surgery, or who have an infection that requires treatment
- People with a serious mental illness
- People with severe lung disease where breathing test results fall below 50% of the expected level
- People with severe liver or kidney problems
- People who have had unstable chest pain (angina) or a heart attack within the past 6 months
- People who have had a stroke or brain bleed within the past 6 months (confirm with trial site regarding specific exceptions)
- People who have used steroid medications (taken throughout the body, not just on the skin) within the past month
- People who need emergency surgery due to complications of stomach cancer such as bleeding, a perforation, or a blockage
- People who have taken part in, or are currently taking part in, another clinical trial within the past 6 months
