Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are male, or a female who is not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you are 18 years of age or older
• You have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) using a standard set of diagnostic guidelines called the Rome IV criteria
• Your IBS symptoms — including abdominal pain, stool consistency, and how often you go to the toilet — are not well controlled
• During the screening period, your worst daily abdominal pain has averaged more than 3 out of 10 over a week
• During the screening period, you have had at least one loose or watery stool (classified as Type 6 or 7 on the Bristol Stool Scale, which describes very soft or liquid stools)

Who may not be able to join:

• You have IBS with mainly constipation symptoms, such as fewer than 3 bowel movements per week, hard or lumpy stools, and having to strain a lot
• You have a history of inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's or ulcerative colitis), celiac disease, or previous gut surgery (other than gallbladder or appendix removal)
• You currently have an active stomach ulcer, duodenal ulcer, diverticulitis, or a gut infection
• You currently have a diagnosis of asthma
• You are currently taking NAC or rifaximin (specific medications)
• You have taken antibiotic tablets or capsules in the last month
• You are currently taking a prokinetic drug (a medication that helps move food through your digestive system) (confirm with trial site)
• You have a serious ongoing health condition affecting your liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, thyroid (if uncontrolled), mental health, or uncontrolled diabetes, which the trial doctor feels would prevent you from safely taking part
