Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 to 89 years old
  • People who are scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) minimally invasive cancer surgery involving the liver, stomach, bile ducts, pancreas, gynecological organs, colon, rectum, or other digestive system organs
  • People who have given their written agreement to take part in the study
  • People whose overall health before surgery is rated at a low-to-moderate risk level by their anaesthetist (known as ASA class I, II, or III — confirm with trial site if unsure what this means)
  • People whose surgery is expected to take between 1 and 8 hours
  • People who are able to understand and report their own pain levels using a simple pain rating scale

Who may not be able to join:

  • People under 18 or aged 90 and over
  • People who have existing liver problems, including cirrhosis
  • People whose overall health before surgery is rated as high risk by their anaesthetist (ASA class IV or higher)
  • People who have a long-term pain condition or who have been taking opioid or pain relief medications regularly
  • People who have a known allergy or medical reason to avoid the study medications or procedures
  • People who have cognitive difficulties or a psychiatric condition that could affect their ability to rate pain or understand what the study involves
  • People who are not able to read or understand English
  • People who have had a major surgery within the past 6 months
  • People who are pregnant
  • People who are already taking part in another clinical trial that could affect the results of this study
