- Adults who have focal epilepsy (seizures that start in one part of the brain) with a long history of seizures that have not been controlled despite trying anti-seizure medications, whether taking one or multiple medications, and where a known cause has been found on brain scans or no cause has been found (called cryptogenic)
- Adults who have recently started having focal seizures, whether on one or multiple anti-seizure medications or not yet on any medication, where seizures are controlled or happen rarely, and where a tumour-related lesion has been identified

- People where there is uncertainty about whether they actually have epilepsy
- People who have cognitive (thinking or memory) difficulties or mental health conditions that would make it hard to take part in an interview, understand the consent process, or complete questionnaires
