Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) — a condition causing ongoing stomach pain at least once a week over the past 3 months, linked to bowel habits such as changes in how often someone goes to the toilet or changes in stool texture
- People whose IBS is mainly constipation-type, a mixed constipation-and-diarrhoea type, or an unspecified type (note: the diarrhoea-predominant type is not eligible — see exclusions below)
- People who have shown a high level of methane gas (10 parts per million or more) on a glucose breath test
- People aged 18 or older at the time of joining the study
- People who are willing to take part and do not object to participation
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have taken antibiotics or probiotics within the 3 months before joining
- People whose IBS is mainly the diarrhoea-predominant type
- People who have had abdominal surgery in the past, other than appendix removal or gallbladder removal
- People with a history of coeliac disease
- People with a confirmed diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis)
- People with a history of bowel (colorectal) cancer
- People with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) that is not well controlled
- People with diabetes that is not well controlled
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People whose freedom is restricted by a court or government order
- Adults who are under legal guardianship or have a court-appointed legal protector
- People who are unable to stop taking proton pump inhibitor medications (a type of stomach acid-reducing tablet) for the duration of the study
