Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged over 18 and under 75 years old
  • People diagnosed with a specific type of stomach cancer called gastric adenocarcinoma (including papillary, tubular, mucinous, signet ring cell, or poorly differentiated types), confirmed by a tissue sample taken during an endoscopy
  • People whose cancer has been staged as locally present in the stomach wall or nearby tissues, with or without lymph node involvement, but with no spread to distant parts of the body — based on a widely used cancer staging system (confirm with trial site)
  • People whose CT scan of the abdomen and lung (or PET-CT scan) showed no cancer spread to distant organs before surgery
  • People with a good general level of physical functioning, rated 0 or 1 on a standard medical scale (meaning fully active or able to carry out light activity)
  • People considered low to moderate risk for undergoing general anaesthesia, based on a standard medical assessment
  • People who have given written agreement to participate in the trial

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have more than one primary stomach cancer, or cancer in multiple separate locations in the body
  • People who have previously had surgery on the upper abdomen (except keyhole surgery to remove the gallbladder)
  • People who have previously had stomach surgery (except certain endoscopic procedures to remove early stomach cancer)
  • People who did not have the required pre-surgery CT and chest/abdominal imaging to fully assess the stage of their cancer
  • People whose pre-surgery scans show enlarged nearby lymph nodes larger than 3 cm
  • People who have had another type of cancer in the past 5 years
  • People who have previously received chemotherapy or radiation therapy before surgery for their current condition
  • People who have had unstable chest pain (angina) or a heart attack in the past 6 months
  • People who have had a stroke or related brain blood vessel event in the past 6 months
  • People who have taken corticosteroid medications continuously for one month or more before the trial
  • People whose lung function test shows breathing capacity below 50% of the expected normal level
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People with a severe mental health condition
  • People who need emergency surgery due to complications from stomach cancer, such as bleeding, blockage, or perforation
  • People whose pre-surgery assessment indicates that other organs would need to be removed at the same time as the stomach surgery
  • People who require surgery for another medical condition at the same time
