Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and whose blood sugar control (measured by a test called glycated hemoglobin, or HbA1c) has been 7% or above at some point in the last 6 months.
- People who have been diagnosed with a gum disease called periodontitis, meaning there is measurable bone or tissue loss around at least 2 teeth that are not next to each other, or significant gum damage on at least 2 teeth, where that damage is caused by gum disease rather than another reason.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have already received treatment for gum disease within the last year.
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as they would be receiving dental care through a separate dedicated health program.
- People who have taken antibiotics or anti-inflammatory pain medications (such as ibuprofen or similar drugs) in the 6 months before the study begins.
