Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have obesity, measured using BMI and waist size based on sex and ethnic-specific guidelines
  • Adults aged 18 years or older
  • People with high blood pressure, with a top (systolic) reading between 120 and 160 mmHg
  • People who have been on stable medication for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, or weight management for at least 3 months
  • People who are not planning to start a new weight loss program during the trial
  • Approximately half of participants will need to have type 2 diabetes with a blood sugar control measurement (HbA1c) between 6.5% and 9.0%

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have had a stroke or heart attack in the past year
  • People with a type 1 diabetes diagnosis
  • People who have lost or gained 5% or more of their body weight in the past 6 months
  • People currently using insulin
  • People with an eating disorder or substance use disorder
  • People with serious depression or other psychiatric conditions
  • People who have had bariatric surgery or any surgery within the past 6 months
  • People with uncontrolled high blood pressure (top reading above 160 mmHg or bottom reading above 100 mmHg)
  • People who experience chest pain (angina)
  • People with certain digestive conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease or celiac disease, pancreatitis, chronic kidney or liver disease, significant heart conditions, or a major ongoing disability or disorder requiring continuous medical care
  • People regularly taking certain herbal supplements or other supplements that could affect the trial's main results (confirm with trial site)
  • People who drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks per day, or who are currently participating in another clinical trial
  • People with allergies or intolerances to soy
  • People with allergies or intolerances to all three of the following: tree nuts, peanuts, and seeds
  • People regularly taking certain medications including high-dose prescription anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antacids, warfarin, or medications that affect a body process called NO synthesis (such as sildenafil or nitrates)
  • People with an active or chronic infection such as HIV, tuberculosis, or COVID-19, or other chronic inflammatory infections
  • People with a chronic inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • People who have used antibiotics within 3 months before the trial starts
