Who might be able to join this trial:

General requirements for all procedures:

• People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) below 35
• People whose condition is suitable for minimally invasive (keyhole-style) robotic surgery
• People who are willing to take part and have signed a consent form

For bowel (colorectal) cancer surgery:

• People with a cancer or large non-cancerous growth in the large bowel or rectum that is suitable for minimally invasive surgery

For a specific type of rectal cancer surgery (transanal total mesorectal excision):

• People with cancer in the middle or lower part of the rectum, located less than 12 cm from the opening of the bowel

For rectal prolapse surgery (rectopexy):

• People diagnosed with rectal prolapse (where part of the rectum slips outside the body) or a related condition called enterocele, that has not been treated before and has no complications

For prostate cancer surgery:

• People diagnosed with prostate cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body

For kidney removal surgery (total or partial nephrectomy):

• People diagnosed with kidney cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body

For bladder removal surgery (radical cystectomy):

• People diagnosed with bladder cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body

For stomach reflux or hiatal hernia surgery:

• People diagnosed with a hiatal hernia (where part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm) and/or persistent acid reflux (heartburn) that is suitable for a surgical repair called fundoplication

For stomach cancer surgery (gastrectomy):

• People diagnosed with a stomach tumour (either stomach cancer or a type called GIST) that is suitable for minimally invasive removal of part or all of the stomach

For oesophageal (food pipe) cancer surgery (esophagectomy):

• People diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus (food pipe) that is suitable for minimally invasive surgery

For gallbladder removal surgery (cholecystectomy):

• People with gallstones causing symptoms, where a doctor has recommended keyhole gallbladder removal surgery

Who may not be able to join:

General exclusions applying to all procedures:

• People for whom general anaesthesia is not safe
• People with a serious other illness that significantly shortens life expectancy or makes surgery much riskier
• People with an active infection that has not yet been treated
• People with a blood clotting problem that cannot be corrected
• People who have another type of cancer, or cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body
• People who need emergency surgery
• People in vulnerable groups, such as those with an intellectual disability or who are pregnant

For bowel (colorectal) cancer surgery:

• People whose tumour has grown into surrounding structures (known as a T4 tumour)
• People with a tumour that has come back after previous treatment
• People who have had extensive prior abdominal surgery that would prevent keyhole surgery

For rectal cancer surgery (transanal total mesorectal excision):

• People whose tumour has grown into surrounding structures (T4), or where the tumour is too close to the surgical margin even after pre-surgery treatment
• People whose tumour requires removal of nearby organs at the same time
• People whose tumour requires a particular type of operation that removes the anus (abdominoperineal resection), or whose tumour has returned after previous treatment
• People with an early-stage tumour (T1) that could be removed with a smaller local procedure instead
• People who have had extensive prior abdominal surgery

For rectal prolapse surgery (rectopexy):

• People who have had extensive prior abdominal surgery that would prevent keyhole surgery

For prostate cancer surgery:

• People who have previously had surgery on their prostate (such as a procedure called TURP)

For kidney removal surgery:

• People who have previously had surgery on the same kidney
• People with unusual or complex kidney anatomy (confirm with trial site)

For oesophageal (food pipe) cancer surgery:

• People who have already had the maximum dose of combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy for their oesophageal cancer and now need a rescue (salvage) operation

For stomach reflux/hernia surgery and stomach cancer surgery:

• People who have previously had open abdominal surgery (a large incision, rather than keyhole surgery) that would prevent minimally invasive surgery

For gallbladder removal surgery:

• People currently experiencing acute cholecystitis (sudden, severe gallbladder inflammation)
• People who have previously had any abdominal surgery
