Who might be able to join this trial:

• People aged over 18 and under 75 years old.
• People who have had a stomach tissue sample (biopsy) taken by camera examination, with results confirming a specific type of stomach cancer or a pre-cancerous growth called an adenoma.
• People diagnosed with early-stage upper stomach cancer or cancer at the junction of the stomach and food pipe, where the tumour is no larger than 4 cm, as confirmed by scans and tissue testing.
• People for whom surgery to remove the upper part of the stomach is planned, with the goal of removing all the cancer, and where at least half of the stomach can be left intact.
• People in good general physical condition, rated 0 or 1 on a standard medical fitness scale (meaning fully active or able to carry out light activity).
• People assessed as being in a suitable health range for undergoing surgery, rated class I to III on a standard anaesthesia risk scale.
• People whose liver, kidneys, and other organs are working well enough to tolerate surgery.
• People who have given written agreement to take part in the trial.

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have already received radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy before surgery.
• People who have more than one cancerous tumour present in the stomach.
• People who have previously had surgery in the upper abdomen, unless it was keyhole surgery to remove the gallbladder.
• People who have previously had stomach surgery, unless it was a specific type of endoscopic (camera-based) procedure to treat stomach cancer.
• People whose scans show the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
• People who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• People with a history of epilepsy, nervous system conditions, or psychiatric illness that has not been fully controlled.
• People with a physical disability affecting their limbs or movement.
• People who have had another type of cancer within the past five years, unless it was a fully treated skin cancer or a very early-stage cervical condition that has been cured.
• People with serious active heart conditions, such as significant heart failure, certain heart rhythm problems, chest pain from heart disease, or a heart attack within the past six months.
• People who have had a stroke or bleeding in the brain within the past six months.
• People with severe infections or other serious health conditions that are not under control.
• People whose breathing test results show their lung capacity is below 50% of what would normally be expected for someone of their age and size.
• People who need emergency surgery because of a complication from the tumour, such as bleeding, a tear in the stomach, or a blockage.
