Who might be able to join this trial:
- The patient and/or their legal guardian has agreed to take part and has signed a consent form.
- Children aged 1 to 14 years old, of any gender.
- People who have been diagnosed with a specific type of epilepsy involving focal seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) or seizures that start in one part of the brain and spread to both sides, based on recognised international medical guidelines.
- People who have been taking one epilepsy medication at a stable dose for at least 4 weeks, and whose doctor considers it appropriate to add a medication called zonisamide to their treatment.
- People who have had at least 2 seizures that spread to both sides of the brain per 28-day period during the 8 weeks before the study begins.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously been treated with zonisamide.
- People with a known allergy to zonisamide, sulfonamide drugs, or any ingredients in the medication.
- People with a history of drug or alcohol misuse.
- People who have had thoughts of suicide or made a suicide attempt in the past 6 months.
- People who are currently taking antidepressants, medications for anxiety, or antipsychotic medications.
- People who have been diagnosed with a progressive disease that affects the brain and its function.
- People whose seizures are not caused by epilepsy but by psychological causes (sometimes called non-epileptic seizures).
- People diagnosed with severe lung disease, serious blood disorders, cancer, immune system conditions, or psychiatric illnesses.
- People who have already had brain surgery for epilepsy, or who are planning to have epilepsy surgery within the next 4 months.
- People whom the trial doctor considers unsuitable for participation for any other reason.
