Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 20 years old or older
- You have type 2 diabetes that is not fully controlled, with a blood sugar measure (HbA1c) between 7% and 10%, and you are currently taking metformin alone, metformin with a sulfonylurea, metformin with a DPP-4 inhibitor, or a three-drug combination including metformin (note: if on three medications, the sulfonylurea would need to be stopped when joining the trial)
- A liver scan done within the last 3 months has shown that you have fat buildup in your liver at a certain level or above (confirm with trial site)
- You have at least one of the following: a large waist size (90 cm or more for men, 85 cm or more for women); high blood pressure or you take blood pressure medication; high triglycerides (fats in the blood) or you take cholesterol-lowering medication; low "good" (HDL) cholesterol; a blood test showing insulin resistance; or a blood test showing raised inflammation levels (confirm with trial site for exact values)
- Your diabetes or metabolic medications have not changed in the past 3 months (unless your doctor confirms the change would not affect the study)
Who may not be able to join:
- You use insulin or have type 1 diabetes
- You have taken any of the following medications in the past 3 months: GLP-1 receptor agonist injections or pills (such as semaglutide or liraglutide), SGLT2 inhibitors (such as empagliflozin), rosiglitazone, vitamin E, or ursodeoxycholic acid
- Your liver fat is caused by something other than metabolic issues, such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or alcohol-related liver disease
- You take certain medications known to cause fat buildup in the liver, including valproic acid, estrogen, tamoxifen, amiodarone, or chloroquine
- You have severe liver problems, shown by significantly abnormal liver blood tests, low protein levels in the blood, low platelet counts, or advanced liver disease (confirm with trial site for exact values)
- You have severe kidney problems, including very low kidney function, end-stage kidney disease, or you are on dialysis
- You have liver cancer, any active cancer, or cancer that has spread to other parts of the body
- You have a history of bladder cancer or currently have bladder cancer
- You have a history of heart failure or currently have heart failure
- You have a terminal (end-of-life) illness
- You have a history of gallstones, long-term pancreatitis, or a recent episode of acute pancreatitis

- You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- You have a known allergy or sensitivity to any ingredients in the study medications
- You have a history of diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious diabetes complication involving very high blood sugar and acid buildup)
