Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 70 years
- People who have been diagnosed with a moderate-to-severe form of gum disease (called periodontitis, specifically Stage II or III; Grade B or C)
- People who have at least one deep gum pocket on each side of the mouth, with no more than 20 teeth affected by abnormal pocket depths
- People who have both single-rooted and multi-rooted teeth present
- People who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes for at least one year before joining the trial
- People who are in generally good health and are able to follow the study requirements
- People who are willing and able to provide written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a cardiac pacemaker
- People with a history of neurological (brain or nerve) conditions
- People with a history of psychiatric (mental health) conditions
- People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- People whose diabetes was caused by steroid medication
- People who are unable or unwilling to attend follow-up appointments or follow home oral care instructions provided as part of the study
