Who might be able to join this trial:

For child participants:

  • Children who have a formal educational or medical diagnosis of autism
  • Children aged between 5 and 9 years old
  • Children whose vision and hearing are within normal range, whether or not they use glasses, hearing aids, or other corrective devices

For adult interventionists (helpers/instructors):

  • Adults aged 18 or older
  • People who can demonstrate basic swimming ability, meaning they are able to tread water for 1 minute and swim 25 yards through the water without a flotation device

Who may not be able to join:

For child participants:

  • Children who can already swim independently, meaning they are able to tread water for 1 minute or move through the water without a flotation device
  • Children who have open wounds or a contagious skin condition
  • Children who have an allergy to chlorine
  • Children who have significant additional physical or neurological conditions, such as uncontrolled seizures, Rett's syndrome, or Angelman's syndrome
  • Children whose families are not able to commit to attending all scheduled sessions and assessments

For adult interventionists:

  • People who have open wounds or an infectious disease
  • People who do not pass a background check
  • People who are not able to commit to the required training (approximately 40 hours) and 10 supervised sessions (approximately 20 hours)
