Who might be able to join this trial:

For autistic adults:

• Adults aged 18 or older who have been diagnosed with autism, confirmed through a specific standardised autism assessment tool called the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule
• People whose autism has been assessed as level 1 or level 2 in severity under the DSM-5 diagnostic system

For non-autistic comparison participants:

• Adults aged 18 or older who do not have an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have had or currently have a serious neurological condition, particularly epilepsy
• People who have had or currently have a serious illness affecting the body, such as heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure
• People who have had or currently have a serious brain injury
• People who have metal devices in their body, such as a pacemaker or a medication pump
• People who have had or currently have a serious mental health condition, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, or substance abuse
• People who are pregnant
• People who have a growth or abnormal mass inside the skull
• People who have previously had brain surgery or an infection of the central nervous system
• People currently taking medications that raise the risk of seizures
• People who have taken part in another clinical trial within the past month
• People who have broken or damaged skin in the area where brain stimulation would be applied
• People who have multiple sclerosis
• People who have large areas of scar tissue caused by reduced blood flow to the brain
• People who have experienced sleep problems during brain stimulation (confirm with trial site)
• People with severe alcohol dependency
• People currently taking anti-seizure medications
• People who have migraines that cannot be controlled and are related to increased pressure in the skull
• People for whom MRI scanning is not suitable, for example due to claustrophobia
• People for whom EEG brain monitoring is not suitable
• People whose autism has been assessed as level 3 severity under the DSM-5 diagnostic system
• People who have had thoughts of suicide within the past year
