This trial has two groups: people with Type 2 diabetes, and people without diabetes (control group). The criteria for each group are listed separately below.
Group 1 – People with Type 2 diabetes:
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form after the study has been fully explained to them, before any study procedures begin
- People between the ages of 60 and 85 (inclusive)
- People with a documented Type 2 diabetes diagnosis
- People who score 26 or higher on a memory and thinking test called the MoCA
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose Type 2 diabetes was diagnosed less than 1 year before enrolling in the trial
- People whose long-term blood sugar level (HbA1c) falls below 6.5% or above 10.0%
- People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) over 40
- People who have had a heart attack or stroke in the past year
- People with active chest pain or symptoms related to heart disease, or heart failure
- People with uncontrolled high blood pressure
- People diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep)
- People with a lung or breathing disease
- People diagnosed with dementia
- People whose kidneys are not filtering blood well enough (confirmed by a specific kidney function measurement)
- People who currently smoke or have smoked within the past year
Group 2 – People without diabetes (control group):

- People between the ages of 60 and 85 (inclusive)
- People who score 26 or higher on a memory and thinking test called the MoCA
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have been diagnosed with any type of diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2)
- People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) over 40
- People who have had a heart attack or stroke in the past year
- People with active chest pain or symptoms related to heart disease, or heart failure
- People with uncontrolled high blood pressure
- People diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep)
- People with a lung or breathing disease
- People diagnosed with dementia
