Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are between 60 and 85 years old (inclusive)
  • You have been diagnosed with a type of epilepsy called "focal epilepsy" (where seizures start in one part of the brain) for at least 2 years, based on current medical standards
  • You have been taking the same epilepsy medication(s) steadily for at least 3 months, and your seizures are reasonably controlled (no more than 4 seizures per month over the past 3 months)
  • You have mild memory or thinking difficulties, shown by a specific memory test score (called the MoCA) between 18 and 25 out of 30
  • You can understand and speak basic Chinese well enough to take part in thinking and memory tests
  • You are willing to take part and have signed a consent form agreeing to join the study

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have been diagnosed with any type of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease or vascular dementia
  • You have had a stroke that showed up on a brain scan, or your brain MRI shows serious damage to the white matter (the brain's communication pathways)
  • You have another brain or nervous system condition that could affect your memory or thinking, such as a brain injury, brain infection, or fluid build-up in the brain
  • You have a serious illness affecting your whole body — such as severe heart, liver, or kidney problems, or a hormonal condition — that could affect your thinking
  • You currently have severe depression or another mental health condition that could affect your thinking and memory test results
  • You have a history of dependence on alcohol, drugs, or other substances that could affect brain function
  • You are allergic to a medication called butylphthalide or any of its ingredients
  • You have taken part in another drug clinical trial within the past 30 days
  • The trial doctors have decided for any other reason that the trial would not be appropriate for you (confirm with trial site)
