Who might be able to join this trial:

All participants must meet these criteria:

  • You are between 18 and 70 years old
  • You are able to understand and agree to participate in the study (give informed consent)

For one part of the study (Aim 1) — people with epilepsy having surgery:

  • You have had electrodes placed in the hippocampus (a part of the brain) as part of Stage 1 epilepsy surgery evaluation
  • You have an IQ score of 80 or above (confirm with trial site)

For another part of the study (Aim 2) — people with an RNS device:

  • You have a responsive neurostimulation (RNS) brain device with at least one electrode placed in the hippocampus
  • It has been at least 5 months since your device was implanted
  • You have relatively few severe seizures — no more than one serious, debilitating seizure per week
  • You are able to walk and wear research equipment on your own, without help
  • You have an IQ score of 80 or above (confirm with trial site)

For another part of the study (Aim 2) — healthy volunteers:

  • You are able to walk and wear research equipment on your own, without help

Who may not be able to join:

For people with an RNS device (Aim 2):

  • You have had a full convulsive (whole-body) seizure at any point in the last year

For all participants:

  • You are legally blind
  • You have used tobacco, marijuana, recreational drugs, or alcohol within one week before cognitive (thinking and memory) testing
  • You are not able to give informed consent
  • You are currently pregnant
