Who might be able to join this trial:
- The child or adolescent must be between 8 and 17 years old
- Basic blood and stool tests must have already been completed (including inflammation markers, a celiac antibody test called TGA, a full blood count, and a stool test called fecal calprotectin)
- A doctor must have confirmed a diagnosis of a gut-brain interaction disorder — specifically irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional abdominal pain, or functional dyspepsia — based on a recognised set of medical criteria called Rome IV
- If constipation is present, it must already be treated following current medical guidelines, with the laxative dose kept stable for at least one month before joining the trial
- If the participant also has celiac disease, they must have been following a strict gluten-free diet for at least six months, and their celiac antibody (TGA) levels must have returned to normal
- If the participant has a neuropsychiatric diagnosis and takes medication for it, at least two months must have passed since any change to that medication dose
- At least one parent and the child or adolescent must be fluent in Swedish, and both must be willing to take part in an educational program, follow through with treatment, complete homework assignments, and fill in questionnaires
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose stomach or gut symptoms are better explained by another physical (organic) illness
- People where, at the assessment stage, mental health concerns or difficult personal or social circumstances — such as serious bullying, frequently missing school, or challenging family situations — are considered more significant than the gut symptoms and require a higher level of specialist care than the trial is able to provide
- People who have already completed gut-directed hypnotherapy or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
