Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are willing and able to give written consent to take part in the study (or have a legal representative who can do this on your behalf)
- You are 70 years old or older
- You have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, or you are currently taking medication to manage blood sugar, and you do not have a history of heart disease
- Your "bad cholesterol" (LDL-C) level is 100 mg/dL or higher and you are not currently on cholesterol-lowering medication, OR you are already taking cholesterol-lowering medication (in which case your cholesterol level does not need to meet a specific number)
Who may not be able to join:
- You have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes
- You have a documented history of heart or blood vessel disease, such as a heart attack, a procedure to open blocked heart arteries, current treatment for a heart attack in progress, a stroke caused by a blood clot, a bulging or enlarged major artery (aortic aneurysm), or poor circulation in the legs or arms
- You are currently receiving treatment for cancer
- You have a serious illness that has required you to be admitted to hospital on a repeated basis
- You have been assessed as "frail" based on a specific Korean health questionnaire (scoring 3 or higher), or you have any condition that significantly limits your ability to take care of yourself
- Your liver is not functioning well, based on blood test results at the time of screening (though you may still qualify if a repeat test closer to the start of the trial shows improved results), or you have liver cirrhosis (confirm with trial site)
- You have any medical reason that would prevent you from safely taking the study medications
- You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
