Who might be able to join this trial:

• People aged between 18 and 80 years old (inclusive), of any gender
• People with stomach cancer or cancer of the gastroesophageal junction (where the stomach meets the food pipe) that has been confirmed by a tissue or cell sample, and cannot be removed by surgery or has spread to other parts of the body
• People who are still reasonably able to carry out daily activities (a measure doctors use called ECOG performance status 0–2; confirm with trial site)
• People whose cancer has tested negative for a protein called HER2
• People who are expected to live for at least 3 more months
• People whose cancer has gotten worse after receiving a first-line treatment combining two types of chemotherapy drugs (fluoropyrimidine and platinum) together with a type of immunotherapy drug (a PD-1/PD-L1 antibody), or whose cancer worsened during a maintenance phase of that treatment; also people whose cancer returned within 6 months of finishing chemotherapy given around the time of surgery
• People who have never previously received a type of chemotherapy called taxane-based therapy
• People who have at least one area of cancer that can be measured on a scan, according to standard measurement rules (RECIST v1.1)
• People whose blood counts, liver, kidney, and heart function meet specific levels required by the trial (measured by blood tests and heart scans, without having received blood transfusions or certain growth factor medications in the 14 days before joining)
• Women who could still become pregnant, or who have been through menopause for less than one year, must have a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have had another type of cancer in the last 5 years, except for certain skin cancers or early-stage cervical cancer that were fully treated with surgery
• People who have previously had a bone marrow transplant or an organ transplant from another person
• People who have had serious heart problems in the past 6 months, such as unstable chest pain or a heart attack
• People who are allergic to the study drug or any of its ingredients
• People with high blood pressure that is not well controlled (blood pressure at or above 150/90 mmHg)
• People who have a condition that affects how the body absorbs medication, or who are unable to swallow tablets or oral medication
• People with active stomach or bowel ulcers, ulcerative colitis, or other digestive tract conditions, or tumours that are actively bleeding, or other conditions that the doctor believes could cause bleeding or a hole in the digestive tract
• People with a significant history of bleeding in the past 3 months (more than 30 mL of blood, including vomiting blood, black stools, or blood in stools), coughing up fresh blood in the past 4 weeks, or a blood clot event such as a stroke or mini-stroke in the past 12 months
• People with significant heart conditions in the past 6 months, including heart attack, severe chest pain, heart bypass surgery, significant heart failure, or heart rhythm problems requiring medication, or a heart pumping function below 50%
• People with a serious active or uncontrolled infection
• People with a known HIV infection, or active hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection based on specific blood test levels
• People with an active autoimmune disease (where the body's immune system attacks itself), or a history of certain autoimmune conditions — some exceptions may apply (confirm with trial site)
• People who have taken immune-suppressing medications or high-dose steroid medications (above a certain dose) within the 7 days before joining
• People with lung conditions such as interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, or radiation-related lung inflammation
• Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
• People with high levels of protein in their urine, based on urine test results
• People whose doctor considers them unsuitable for this trial for any other medical reason
