Who might be able to join this trial:

Sub-study 1 – Healthy participants:

  • People aged 23 to 50 years
  • People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) between 20.0 and 26.9
  • People with a blood sugar control measure (HbA1c) below 42 mmol/mol, indicating no diabetes
  • People who are able to give their consent to take part

Sub-study 2 – People with Type 2 Diabetes:

  • People aged 23 to 60 years
  • People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for at least 3 months
  • People with a blood sugar control measure (HbA1c) above 53 mmol/mol
  • People who are managed with metformin as their only diabetes medication
  • People who are able to give their consent to take part

Sub-study 2 – Healthy comparison participants:

  • People aged 23 to 64 years
  • People with a blood sugar control measure (HbA1c) below 42 mmol/mol, indicating no diabetes
  • People who are able to give their consent to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have anaemia (low red blood cell levels or low haemoglobin)
  • People with elevated liver enzyme levels (ALT more than twice the upper normal limit), or any known liver, gallbladder, or digestive tract condition
  • People with kidney disease, indicated by elevated creatinine levels in the blood
  • People who have previously had surgery to remove part of the stomach or intestines (except removal of the appendix or gallbladder), or any major abdominal surgery including weight-loss surgery
  • People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or a blood sugar control measure at or above 42 mmol/mol — applies to Sub-study 1 only
  • People taking any blood sugar-lowering medication other than metformin — applies to Sub-study 2 only
  • People with a chronic lung condition called COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) — applies to Sub-study 2 only
  • People who regularly smoke or use any nicotine-containing products
  • People who experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces)
  • People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant during the study
  • People who have recently started a special diet, made major lifestyle changes, or lost more than 5% of their body weight in the 3 months before or during the study
  • People taking any medication, or living with any physical or psychological condition, that the trial team considers may affect their ability to participate (confirm with trial site)
  • People who are not able to speak or read Danish
