Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 to 64 years who have a long-term (chronic) hepatitis B infection, falling into one of three groups:
- Group 1 – People with hepatitis B who have been taking antiviral medication (TAF or TDF) for at least 2 years and whose virus levels have been consistently kept very low by the treatment
- Group 2 – People with hepatitis B who are not currently on treatment, where the virus is present in the body but not causing active liver damage (called "immune tolerant"), with either high or low levels of virus in the blood
- Group 3 – People who previously had hepatitis B but whose bodies have fully cleared the virus, meaning the surface protein of the virus is no longer detected and protective antibodies have developed
- Adults aged 18 to 64 years who have never had hepatitis B and have been vaccinated against it (for the healthy control group)
- People who are willing and able to give their informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People younger than 18 or older than 65 years of age
- People who have had surgery on their urinary or reproductive organs, including a vasectomy
- People who have previously been treated with interferon therapy
- People who also have an HIV infection
- People who also have a hepatitis C infection
- People who also have a hepatitis delta infection
