Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 65 years old
- Your IBS symptoms are rated as moderate to severe based on a standard symptom scoring test (a score above 175 on the IBS-Symptom Severity Score)
- Your symptoms have not improved enough after trying common IBS treatments, such as certain antispasmodics, laxatives, anti-diarrhoea medication, certain antibiotics, antidepressants, or peppermint oil
- You have already been tested and ruled out for coeliac disease (a gut condition triggered by gluten)
- You are willing and able to give your written agreement to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are a woman who could become pregnant but are unwilling to use an acceptable form of contraception during the trial
- Your immune system is severely weakened — for example, if you have had an organ transplant, have a very low white blood cell count, are currently receiving cancer treatment, or are HIV positive
- Your gut symptoms are caused by another diagnosed condition, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or a gut infection
- You have a severe allergy to any of the ingredients in the capsules used in this trial
- You have started a new antidepressant or had your antidepressant dose changed in the last 3 months
- You have other serious health conditions, including significant neurological (brain/nerve) or psychiatric (mental health) conditions
- You have taken antibiotics in the 3 months before joining the trial
- You have previously had a faecal microbiota transplant (FMT) — a treatment involving donor stool — at any point in the past
- You are unwilling to swallow the capsules used in this trial
