Who might be able to join this trial:

This trial has three separate groups. You may qualify for one of the following:

Group 1 – People with post-infectious IBS (PI-IBS):

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You have been diagnosed with a specific type of IBS that developed after a gut infection, confirmed using standard diagnostic guidelines called "Rome IV criteria"
  • Your diagnosis was made no more than 3 months before joining the trial
  • You are willing to give written consent and follow the study procedures

Group 2 – People who had a gut infection but did NOT develop IBS:

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You had an infectious stomach or gut illness more than 6 months before joining the trial
  • You have fully recovered with no ongoing gut symptoms

Group 3 – Healthy volunteers:

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You are a healthy donor from a stool transplant or blood donation programme
  • You have no history of gut or other long-term health conditions

Who may not be able to join:

Group 1 – People with post-infectious IBS:

  • You have a long-term gut condition such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, gut cancer, or a systemic autoimmune condition
  • You have had major surgery on your abdomen in the past

Group 2 – People who had a gut infection but did NOT develop IBS:

  • You have ever been diagnosed with IBS
  • You have any long-term gut or other ongoing health condition

Group 3 – Healthy volunteers:

  • You have any long-term gut or other ongoing health condition
  • You have taken antibiotics or probiotics within the last 4 weeks
  • You regularly take medication that may affect gut bacteria, such as proton pump inhibitors (e.g. omeprazole) (confirm with trial site)
