Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who have been diagnosed with stomach cancer or cancer at the junction of the stomach and oesophagus, confirmed by a tissue or cell sample
  • People with a general health and activity level rated as reasonably functional (a score of 0–2 on a standard medical scale, meaning able to carry out at least some daily activities)
  • People whose blood counts, liver, kidney, and protein levels meet certain minimum standards, checked within 7 days before joining
  • People with an estimated life expectancy of at least 3 months
  • People willing to provide blood samples for a specific type of cancer DNA testing

Additionally, the trial has three separate groups, each with their own extra requirements:

  • Pre-surgery group: People who are planned to receive treatment before possible surgery, whose cancer is locally advanced or has spread to a very limited number of sites (at most one other organ and no more than five spots), and who have not yet received any systemic treatment for their stomach cancer
  • After-surgery group: People who have already had surgery aimed at fully removing their cancer, whose cancer was confirmed as stage II or III without spread to distant parts of the body, and who are planned to receive standard follow-up chemotherapy
  • Advanced disease group: People whose cancer cannot be surgically removed or has spread and is not suitable for curative surgery, who are planned to receive chemotherapy with or without immunotherapy, and who have at least one tumour that can be measured on scans

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have had another type of cancer in the past 5 years, with the exception of certain treated skin cancers or early-stage cervical cancer
  • People with cancer that has spread to the brain and is not under control, or who have a primary brain tumour
  • People with serious heart problems such as a recent heart attack, unstable chest pain, or heart failure
  • People with a severe active infection
  • People with serious blood clotting disorders or a significant tendency to bleed
  • People with significant failure of major organs that, in the medical team's judgement, would put them at risk
  • People with a build-up of fluid around the lungs or in the abdomen that requires medical treatment to drain
  • People with any other condition that the trial doctors consider would make participation unsafe or unsuitable
