Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged between 18 and 60 years old
  • People who have been diagnosed with diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) according to a standard set of diagnostic guidelines called Rome IV criteria
  • People who have had recurring abdominal pain at least once a week over the last three months, with symptoms that began at least six months before diagnosis

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who did not complete their daily symptom diary at least 50% of the time during the screening period
  • People with a history of a diagnosed gut disease such as inflammatory bowel disease
  • People who have had surgery to remove part of their digestive tract or their gallbladder
  • People diagnosed with a Helicobacter pylori infection within the past two years
  • People with a history of gluten or lactose intolerance
  • People with a history of cancer
  • People with a history of neurological or psychiatric conditions
  • People with serious ongoing health conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, an overactive thyroid, or severe liver, kidney, or heart problems
  • People who have used probiotics, prebiotics, antibiotics, gut-motility medications, anti-diarrhoea medications, certain antidepressants (tricyclic antidepressants), or immune-suppressing medications within four weeks before the screening period
  • People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or within 12 months of giving birth
  • People with a severe fear of needles, an allergy to metal, an implanted cardiac pacemaker, or a known history of serious allergic reactions
