Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are between 18 and 75 years old (inclusive).
  • You are generally able to carry out some daily activities and care for yourself (your doctor will assess your overall physical functioning level).
  • You have been diagnosed with a specific type of stomach cancer near the upper part of the stomach or at the junction between the stomach and food pipe, confirmed by a tissue sample (biopsy).
  • Your cancer is at an early-to-intermediate stage and has not spread to distant parts of the body.
  • Your tumor is no larger than 4 cm, and it has grown no more than 2 cm into the food pipe (esophagus).
  • Surgeons believe they can remove the upper part of your stomach completely, leaving no cancer behind, and can reconnect the digestive tract in a way that works properly.
  • A team of medical specialists has agreed that removing only part of your stomach (rather than all of it) is the right approach for you, and that you do not need treatment before surgery.
  • Scans (CT or MRI) show the cancer has not spread to the liver, lungs, or the lining of the abdomen.
  • You are considered fit enough to safely undergo anesthesia and surgery.
  • Your blood, liver, kidney, heart, and lung function are all at acceptable levels.
  • You are able to understand the study and sign a consent form agreeing to take part.
  • You are willing and able to attend follow-up appointments for 12 months after surgery.

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your cancer has reached an advanced local stage (T4) or has already spread to other parts of the body.
  • The cancer has grown more than 2 cm into the food pipe (esophagus).
  • You have previously had major surgery on your stomach, such as having part or all of it removed.
  • You have been diagnosed with another type of cancer within the last 5 years.
  • You have serious health conditions affecting your heart, lungs, or other organs that would make surgery or anesthesia unsafe.
  • You need emergency surgery right away due to active bleeding, a hole in the stomach, or a sudden blockage.
  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have a serious mental health condition or significant memory/thinking difficulties that would make it hard to follow the study requirements.
  • Your doctor believes there is any other reason that makes this trial unsuitable for you (confirm with trial site).
