Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are right-handed, between 18 and 60 years old, and have completed more than 6 years of schooling
• You have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) according to specific medical guidelines (called Rome IV criteria), meaning you have had symptoms for at least 6 months, and for the past 3 months you have had recurring stomach pain or discomfort on at least 3 days per month
• Your stomach pain or discomfort is connected to at least two of the following: it gets better after going to the toilet, it started when how often you go to the toilet changed, or it started when the look or consistency of your stools changed
• You experience one or more of these additional symptoms: going to the toilet fewer than 3 times a week or more than 3 times a day, stools that are very hard/lumpy or very loose/watery, straining when using the toilet, feeling a sudden urgent need to go or feeling like you haven't fully emptied your bowels, passing mucus, or feeling bloated

Who may not be able to join:

• You have taken anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications (including certain herbal or Chinese medicines) in the past month
• You have taken antibiotics or probiotic supplements in the past month
• You have another gut condition such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a bowel blockage, or you have had surgery on your digestive system
• You have a current or past history of a mental health or neurological condition, such as psychosis, a brain tumour, or problems with consciousness
• You have serious liver or kidney disease, heart or blood vessel disease, or cancer
• You have any metal implants in your body such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, nerve stimulator, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, or any metal fragments in your body or eyes (confirm with trial site)
• You have non-magnetic metal implants such as titanium or orthopaedic implants, an intrauterine device (IUD/coil), or permanent dentures or dental implants (confirm with trial site)
• You have had a tattoo or permanent makeup (such as tattooed eyebrows or lip liner) applied within the past month
• You have a fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia)
• You currently have a fever
