Who might be able to join this trial:

• People between 3 and 60 years of age.
• People who have been diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy, meaning seizures have continued despite trying at least two different seizure medications at the right doses.
• People who have been diagnosed with a type of epilepsy that starts in one specific area of the brain (focal epilepsy), and whose medical team has assessed them as suitable for brain surgery to remove that area.
• People whose thinking or developmental abilities are strong enough to take part in study assessments, as judged by the medical team using age-appropriate tests — specifically, children aged 3 to 6 must score within the normal range on the Griffiths Mental Development Scales; children aged 6 to 16 must score within the normal range on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children; and people older than 16 must score 24 or higher on the Mini-Mental State Examination.
• People who have given written consent to take part, or whose legal guardian has done so on their behalf.

Who may not be able to join:

• People whose medical team suspects their epilepsy originates from a specific deep inner region of the brain called the mesial temporal lobe, based on a specialist pre-surgery review.
• People who have previously had brain surgery involving opening the skull (a craniotomy) before this epilepsy surgery.
• People living with a serious psychiatric, cognitive, or psychological condition that would prevent them from completing the study or attending follow-up appointments.
• People for whom surgery is medically unsuitable for any reason.
