Who might be able to join this trial:
As a Patient:
- You have symptoms that suggest your immune system may be affecting your brain or spinal cord, and/or brain scan results showing signs of inflammation or damage to the protective covering of nerve fibers
- You are at least 12 years old at the time of joining the study
- You are willing to share your medical records, including past MRI scans, with the research team
- You are an adult able to give your own consent, or have someone legally authorized to consent on your behalf — or, if you are a minor, your parent or legal guardian can consent for you, and you are willing to agree to take part yourself (if old enough to do so)
- If joining the in-person group: you are able to take part in procedures such as a lumbar puncture (spinal tap), MRI scan, and physical/functional assessments
As a Healthy Volunteer (in-person):
- You are at least 18 years old
- Your vital signs (such as blood pressure and heart rate) are in the normal range at your screening visit
- You are able to give your own consent
- You are willing and able to take part in study procedures such as a blood draw and lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
Who may not be able to join:
As a Patient:
- You have a serious medical condition that would make taking part in research unsafe or impossible
- If joining the in-person group: you have a medical reason why you cannot have an MRI scan — for example, you have a pacemaker, an implanted pump, other metal implants, or body piercings that cannot be removed
- You are not willing to allow the research team to collect and store biological samples (such as blood or spinal fluid) from you
As a Healthy Volunteer (in-person):
- You have an inflammatory condition affecting your whole body, or any neurological (brain or nerve) disease — whether inflammatory or not
- You have a past or current history of alcohol or substance misuse
- You have a medical reason why you cannot have an MRI scan (such as a pacemaker, metal implants, or body piercings that cannot be removed)
- You have a medical reason why you cannot have a lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
- You experience claustrophobia or have another psychological reason that would make an MRI difficult (confirm with trial site)
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have any other condition that would prevent you from safely having the study procedures done
- You have a history of hearing problems, known issues with your acoustic reflex, or tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
