Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old
  • You are scheduled for abdominal surgery, either open surgery (laparotomy) or keyhole surgery (laparoscopy), for weight-loss surgery, gallbladder removal, or abdominal wall repair
  • You have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or above AND have been diagnosed with diabetes based on blood sugar test results
  • You have a BMI of 35 or above AND have blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not yet at diabetes level (sometimes called "pre-diabetes")
  • You have a BMI of 35 or above AND have normal blood sugar levels with no diabetes
  • You have a BMI below 27 AND have normal blood sugar levels with no diabetes
  • You have a BMI between 27 and 35 AND have normal blood sugar levels with no diabetes

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are not able to understand and receive clear information about the trial (confirm with trial site)
  • You do not wish to sign the consent form agreeing to take part
  • You have an additional health condition that, in the surgeon's opinion, could increase the risk of complications from having a tissue sample taken during surgery
