Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 0 to 90 years old
- People with advanced kidney disease (stage 5) who are on peritoneal dialysis (a type of dialysis done through the abdomen)
- People with normal kidney function who are scheduled for planned abdominal surgery for a minor condition, such as a hernia repair or gallstone removal
- People who have previously been on peritoneal dialysis or have had a kidney transplant
- People who are able to give both verbal and written agreement to participate
- Adult patients who can consent for themselves, or for patients under the legal age of adulthood, a parent or legal guardian who is able to give consent on their behalf
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have abdominal scarring, abnormal structures, or inflammation in the abdomen that is not related to peritoneal dialysis
- People who have cancer that has spread to multiple parts of the body
- People with severe heart failure or other serious medical conditions where an additional procedure could increase health risks
- People who are pregnant
- Babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy (premature babies)
- Newborns with a blood haemoglobin level below 10 g/dl, or children and adults with a level below 8 g/dl (a measure of red blood cell levels that indicates anaemia)
