Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with, or are suspected to have, acute optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve) in at least one eye, and your vision symptoms started no more than 3 weeks ago (not counting eye pain)
- You are currently taking medication to manage a condition like multiple sclerosis — this does not automatically disqualify you
- If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you are willing to use appropriate birth control throughout the trial
- You are able to understand the study and sign a consent form agreeing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- You have another significant eye condition, such as diabetes-related eye disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, or severe short-sightedness
- There is bleeding at the optic disc (back of the eye) in the affected eye
- You have no ability to perceive any light at all in the affected eye
- Both eyes are affected by optic neuritis at the same time
- There are certain specific changes visible in the affected eye (called cotton wool spots or a macular star) (confirm with trial site)
- You have a history of a significant heart rhythm or electrical conduction problem
- You have a history of cancer
- You have had thoughts of suicide or suicidal behaviour in the past 6 months
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant
- You are already taking part in another clinical study, unless this has been approved in advance
- You are already receiving another treatment specifically aimed at repairing the myelin (protective nerve coating) (confirm with trial site)
- Your kidney function or liver function blood test results are above certain levels (confirm with trial site)
- You have had a problem with drug or alcohol misuse in the past year
- You have untreated vitamin B12 deficiency or untreated underactive thyroid
- You have a significant ongoing illness affecting the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, immune system, mental health, or other major body systems that the trial doctor believes could affect your safety or the study results
- You test positive for a specific antibody associated with a condition called neuromyelitis optica (NMO) within the first 2 weeks after being enrolled in the trial
