Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 8 years old or older, both male and female
- People who have never smoked
- People with cystic fibrosis (CF) or asthma who have a formal diagnosis and whose symptoms are at their usual stable level (confirm with trial site)
- People whose lung function test result (FEV1) is above 40% of the expected value for their age and size
- People who are willing to take part and able to sign a consent or assent form
- People who are able to hold their breath for up to 20 seconds
- People who can perform consistent, repeatable breathing tests, where the top three results are close to each other in value
- For a specific sub-group: people admitted to the Hospital for Sick Children for a lung flare-up, including those who will continue treatment with IV antibiotics at home after discharge
Who may not be able to join:
- People who, in the opinion of the investigator, are not able to give informed consent, or who cannot read or understand the written study materials
- People with a history of heart conditions, including blocked arteries, irregular heartbeat, or severe high blood pressure
- People (outside the lung flare-up sub-group) who have had a cold or chest infection in the last four weeks
- People who need extra oxygen to breathe, or whose blood oxygen level at rest during the day is 95% or below
- People who are unable to perform the required breathing tests
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who, in the investigator's opinion, have a physical, psychological, or other condition that would prevent them from having an MRI scan — for example, severe fear of enclosed spaces
- People who have a pacemaker, neurostimulator, implanted insulin pump, aneurysm clip, artificial limb, metal fragments, surgical staples, ear implants, or any other metal in their body that cannot be removed and is not compatible with MRI
