Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are planned to receive radiation treatment aimed at curing cancer of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, or an unknown primary cancer that has spread to lymph nodes in the neck
- People with oropharyngeal (throat) cancer not related to HPV (human papillomavirus) that is classified as stage II through IVb
- People with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer at an early tumour stage (T1) with lymph node involvement but no spread to other parts of the body, or with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer at stage T2 or higher with no spread to other parts of the body
- People with laryngeal (voice box) cancer classified as stage II through IVb
- People with hypopharyngeal cancer classified as stage I through IVb
- People with nasopharyngeal cancer classified as stage I through IVb
- People with unknown primary cancer that has spread to neck lymph nodes, classified as stage I through III
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have been diagnosed with another type of cancer, except for common non-melanoma skin cancers
- People who have previously received treatment for head and neck cancer, or who have previously had radiation to the head or neck area
- People who have had prior surgery on the head or neck (though biopsies, tonsil removal, and tracheotomy procedures are generally not disqualifying — confirm with trial site)
- People who already have difficulty swallowing that is unrelated to their cancer diagnosis, such as a swallowing problem caused by a nerve or neurological condition
