Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have a head and neck cancer that has come back (recurred), confirmed by a tissue sample analysis
- People whose returning cancer is classified as an early-to-intermediate stage (rcT1-3, meaning the tumour is not the most advanced size)
- People whose tumour is located in a position that makes a specific internal radiation treatment (brachytherapy) physically possible
- People with no cancer spread to nearby lymph nodes, or who have had lymph nodes removed with clean margins and no more than 2 affected lymph nodes without the cancer breaking through the lymph node's outer layer
- People with no cancer spread to distant parts of the body (M0)
- People who are reasonably well and able to carry out daily activities (rated 0–2 on a standard medical performance scale)
- People who previously received radiation therapy of at least 50 Gy (a standard unit of radiation dose)
- People whose previous radiation therapy was completed more than 6 months ago
- People who have provided written consent to participate in the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose cancer is classified as the most advanced local stage (cT4)
- People who have more than 2 affected lymph nodes, or whose cancer has broken through the outer layer of a lymph node
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have a connective tissue disease (a condition affecting the body's structural tissues)
- People who have an inherited condition that makes them unusually sensitive to radiation, such as Ataxia Telangiectasia or similar conditions
- People who have a psychiatric disorder
