Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have sickle cell disease (any type), and this is recorded in your St. Jude medical records.
- You are coming to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital because you are in a pain crisis (called a vaso-occlusive crisis, or VOC).
- You are between 6 and 25 years old.
- You are able to speak and understand English.
Who may not be able to join:
- You have already taken part in this same study before.
- You are currently enrolled in another clinical trial that is also studying pain management for this same pain crisis.
- Your pain is mild (rated less than 4 out of 10), or your pain does not require strong pain medication (opioids).
- Along with your pain, you also have other serious symptoms that need extra treatment, such as a fever with a known cause, a lung complication called acute chest syndrome, a recent injury, or a condition where the spleen traps blood cells (splenic sequestration).
- You have a developmental condition, a psychiatric condition (such as autism or claustrophobia), or a sensory disability (such as a vision or hearing problem) that would make it difficult for you to use a head-mounted device (confirm with trial site).
- You or your parent/legal guardian are unable or unwilling to sign a written consent form to take part in the study.
