Who might be able to join this trial:
- People with a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 35 (a measure of body weight relative to height that falls in the overweight to moderately obese range)
- People with a larger-than-average waist size — at least 94 cm for men or at least 80 cm for women
- People who also have at least one of the following: high triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood) at 150 mg/dL or above; low "good" (HDL) cholesterol — 40 mg/dL or below for men, or 50 mg/dL or below for women; elevated blood pressure (130 mmHg systolic or 85 mmHg diastolic or higher); or a fasting blood sugar level of 100 mg/dL or above
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a dairy allergy
- People who smoke or use any tobacco products
- People with a systolic (top number) blood pressure of 160 mmHg or higher, or a diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure above 100 mmHg
- People with a fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or above
- People with a history of heart attack, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, or thyroid disease (unless the thyroid condition is well-controlled with medication)
- People who take cholesterol-lowering or lipid-lowering medications
- People who take blood pressure-lowering or blood sugar-lowering supplements, including psyllium, fish oil capsules, soy lecithin, niacin, fibre, flax, phytoestrogens, or foods enriched with stanols or sterols
- People who are unwilling to stop taking nutritional supplements, herbal products, vitamins, or other probiotic products during the trial
- People who have been diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
- People who have used antibiotics within the past two months
- People who drink 14 or more standard alcoholic drinks per week
- People who regularly use anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen
