Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease classified as Stage 3 or 4, with kidney function test results (called GFR) falling between 15 and 59 mL/min/1.73 m²
- People who are between 35 and 70 years of age (men and women)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a known allergy to a group of medications called Glitazones
- People who have had a heart attack
- People who have heart failure
- People who have angina (chest pain related to the heart)
- People who have a history of kidney stones
- People who have liver disease or abnormal liver test results
- People who have anaemia with a haemoglobin level below 8 g/dl
- People who currently have cancer and are receiving treatment for it
- People who have previously had an organ transplant
- People who are currently taking medications that suppress the immune system
- People who have HIV infection
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People who currently use tobacco products
- People who are currently taking Dilantin (phenytoin) or oral contraceptives, due to possible interactions with Glitazones
- People who have a self-reported history of low blood sugar episodes (hypoglycaemia)
