Who might be able to join this trial:

Healthy Control Group

  • People aged 18 to 80 who are generally healthy
  • People who have had a normal eye examination within the past year

TBI Patients Without Light Sensitivity or Headache

  • People aged 18 to 80 who have had a traumatic brain injury (TBI — an injury to the brain caused by an external force)
  • People who do not experience light sensitivity or migraine headaches

Patients With Light Sensitivity Not Caused by TBI

  • People aged 18 to 80 who experience light sensitivity, based on their own reported symptoms
  • Light sensitivity may or may not have an identified cause (for example, a history of eye inflammation, certain childhood eye conditions, meningitis, radiation, or a tumour)

TBI Patients With Light Sensitivity

  • People aged 18 to 80 who have had a traumatic brain injury and whose light sensitivity is believed to be a result of that injury

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have eye or health conditions that affect the retina, optic nerve, or visual pathway, such as glaucoma, optic nerve disease, or retinal disease
  • People with diabetes or high blood pressure that is not well managed
  • People with a history of head trauma, concussion, or traumatic brain injury (this exclusion applies to the Healthy Control and Non-TBI Light Sensitivity groups only)
  • People with a history of neck or spinal injury or surgery (this exclusion applies to the Healthy Control and Non-TBI Light Sensitivity groups only)
  • People taking medications or using eye drops that could interfere with how the pupil responds to light or affect muscle measurements — including certain eye drops that affect pupil size, sedatives such as benzodiazepines or barbiturates, or opioid pain medications
  • People in the Healthy Control group who experience light sensitivity or migraine headaches
