Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are older than 21 years of age
  • You have limited ability to use your arms or hands due to a stroke, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), multiple sclerosis, a neck/spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, muscle disease, or severe nerve damage
  • Your disability is severe enough that you have lost independence and cannot manage everyday tasks on your own (a score of 4 or higher on a standard disability scale)
  • If your condition is due to a stroke or spinal cord injury, at least 1 year has passed since it happened
  • You live within a two-hour drive of UCSF (University of California, San Francisco)

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are unable to read or understand English
  • You are unable to give your own informed consent to participate
  • You have been diagnosed with dementia
  • You currently have active depression, severe anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD, or a personality disorder
  • You have a history of suicide attempts or thoughts of suicide
  • You have a history of substance abuse
  • You are on blood-thinning medication, have uncontrolled high blood pressure, cancer, or a serious failure of a major organ
  • You are unable to attend the required follow-up visits for the study
  • You have previously had any brain surgery
  • You have a history of seizures or epilepsy
  • Your immune system is weakened or compromised
  • You currently have an active infection
  • You have a drainage system in your brain/spine or an active fluid leak in that area
  • You need treatments such as diathermy (deep heat therapy), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for an ongoing condition
  • You have an implanted electronic device such as a brain stimulator, pacemaker, defibrillator, or medication pump, or you have any metal fragments in your head or neck
  • You have known allergies to silicone, titanium, platinum iridium, or nichrome (materials used in the devices involved in this trial)
