Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are at least 18 years old
- People who have been diagnosed with a specific type of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil, confirmed by a tissue or cell sample, that has not been treated before, and is at an early to intermediate stage (as classified by a standard staging system called AJCC 8th edition)
- People whose cancer is planned to be treated with radiation therapy alone, directed to one side of the body, with the goal of curing the cancer — any surgery would only happen afterward if needed, not as part of the planned treatment (a previous removal of a lymph node or tonsil for diagnostic purposes does not disqualify someone)
- People who are generally well and able to carry out daily activities with little to no limitation (rated 0 or 1 on a standard health performance scale)
- People who are able to understand information about the treatment and provide written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose treating doctor judges that they would benefit more from radiation directed to both sides of the neck, or from receiving chemotherapy at the same time as radiation
- People who have, or have previously had, another cancer — with exceptions for certain treated skin cancers or cervical pre-cancers with at least 3 years of follow-up, or other previous cancers with at least 5 years free of disease
- People who have two or more separate primary cancers in the head and neck area at the time of diagnosis
- People who have had previous surgery or radiation treatment to the head and neck area that the trial investigator believes could affect the study results
- People with another serious illness that is expected to affect survival within the next 2 years
- People with psychiatric conditions, addiction disorders, or other medical conditions that the investigator believes may affect their ability to follow the trial requirements
- People who have metal or amalgam dental fillings close to the tumour area, if the trial investigator determines this could interfere with radiation treatment (confirm with trial site)
