• You have been diagnosed with a specific type of throat cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) affecting the tonsil, base of the tongue, or an unknown primary site, confirmed by a tissue or cell sample

• Your doctors believe surgery can remove the cancer completely with no cancer cells left at the edges
• Your surgery will be performed at Brigham & Women's Hospital

• You are generally healthy and able to carry out normal daily activities with little or no limitation (confirm with trial site)
• Your blood, liver, and kidney test results are within acceptable ranges (confirm with trial site for specific values)
• You have smoked 20 pack-years or fewer in your lifetime (for example, 1 pack per day for 20 years, or 2 packs per day for 10 years)
• Your cancer is at an early stage — classified as T0, T1, or T2, and N0 or N1 (confirm with trial site)
• Your cancer has not spread to other parts of the body
• You are able to understand and are willing to sign a consent form

Who may not be able to join:

• You have had a head or neck cancer diagnosis within the last 5 years
• You have previously had radiation treatment to the head or neck area
• You have lymph nodes in your neck that feel fixed in place or clumped together
• You have a serious uncontrolled illness, such as an active infection, unstable heart condition, or a mental health condition that might make it difficult to follow the study requirements
• You are currently pregnant (a pregnancy test will be required before joining)
• You are currently breastfeeding — breastfeeding would need to be stopped before enrolling in the study
